Divine Questions #10

Will you give me a drink?

Will you give me a drink?

The story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well has always intrigued me.

The story starts by saying that Jesus, “…had to go through Samaria…” (John 4:4). This wasn’t the normal route back to Galilee, as the Jews tended to avoid Samaria. So why did Jesus have to go this way?

I believe that He was following His Father’s directive, since He only did what He saw His Father doing (John 5:19). But, whatever His reason for passing through the Samaritan town, the meeting with the woman was clearly a divine appointment.

Of course, the disciples were oblivious to the significance of the encounter – they went to get some lunch – as we often do in such circumstances. But while they were gone, Jesus asked the woman a question, “…will you give me a drink…”? (John 4:7).

It proved to be a masterful question, which both shocked the Samaritan woman and also provoked a conversation that eventually resulted in the entire town coming out to meet Him.

One carefully chosen and informed question caused the transformation of hundreds of lives.

Do you ask the Father what He is doing?

Do you look for divine appointments?

Do you pray about the perfect question to ask?
